In the Black Rock Desert in 2006, 90 artists from Belgium shipped 100 miles of wooden beams to the playa. A 15 story, 200’x100’ undulating Frank Gehry-esque space, described by Burning Man founder Larry Harvey as “the talk of the playa” appears. Dwarfing all other sculptures, the Burners nicknamed it the “Belgium Waffle.” The biggest draw at night, revelers packed into the cavern and danced to electronica, bathed in neon-green light. “We didn’t use a model, we just started at the bottom and kept adding as we went up,” said Jan Kriekels, who said he funded the entire $250,000 project, including buying $250 tickets for the volunteers who spent three weeks building it. Uchronia, named after a Belgian art movement, centered on a world without the concept of time, Kriekels said. “This piece is a symbol for a system that creates its own creators. We all did this together without being told how to do it — we are factory workers, bookmakers, editors, designers, artists, salespeople — and we can only do this if we refuse to be defined,” he said. This is their story.

Welcome to the 2008 Santa Cruz Film Festival
The Santa Cruz Film Festival is a growing international festival that fosters cross cultural exchange by screening independent films and producing multi-disciplined art events throughout the year.
Since the inaugural year (honored by The Downtown Business Assoc. as the Cultural Event of the Year) our programming has championed voices and stories that are often left out of mainstream cinema. We have presented films from 5 continents.
The Santa Cruz Film Festival presents nine days of non-stop, truly independent film screenings from May 9-17, 2008. Venues include: The Del Mar, The Rio Theatre, The Museum of Art and History, The Regal Riverfront Twin, Community TV, and the Cayuga Vault.
This year the Festival will present over 140 films from 26 countries, 17 World Premieres, and 4 US Premieres The fest will screen 41 Documentaries, 76 Narratives, 15 Animation, 21 Experimental, 43 Student 22 Local Grown, and 12 < 18 years of age films all of which will be in consideration for SCFF’s Audience Awards. The Jury winning documentary will receive a World Premier on Link TV.
Our community is reflected in our programming. 20% of our films are internationally produced, 10% are locally produced, and approximately 50% are produced or directed by women. 15%-20% are programmed for a GLBT audience. 10%-15% are by or about Latinos. 10% are youth-produced (under 18 years of age) including by students at high schools in Watsonville, Aptos, Scotts Valley, and Santa Cruz.
According to the Santa Cruz County Visitors and Convention Bureau, the SCFF has brought 1 million dollars to Santa Cruz County businesses since its inception in 2001. Over 23% of festival attendees come from outside of the county. The festival promotes Santa Cruz globally, while contributing to the economy and enhancing the collective cultural awareness locally.
The Santa Cruz Film Festival strives to engage in cultural and artistic diplomacy.
Welcome to the Santa Cruz Film Festival 2007
Now in our sixth year, the fest will bring a unique, intelligent and culturally viable festival to Santa Cruz. Our mission to explore new work from around the globe and showcase it in Santa Cruz helps inspire artists, filmmakers and the community at large.

The 2007 festival will again feature cutting-edge directors, educational forums, and unique films. We also produce diverse cultural events throughout the year.

In the past 5 years The Santa Cruz Film Festival has exhibited over 500 independent films that have been viewed by the Santa Cruz Community and a growing number of international visitors.

Approximately 20% of all of the films programmed per fest are from outside the US and 10% are locally produced films. Over 30,000 film-goers have attended the festival; that in turn has produced substantial revenue for the merchants and hospitality industry of SC County.
