SUMMARY:One Fast Move Or I'm Gone : Kerouac's Big Sur
DESCRIPTION:American novelist and poet\, leading figurehead and spokesman
of the Beat Generation. Kerouac's search for spiritual liberation produ
ced his best known work\, the autobiographical novel On the Road (1957).
The first beat novel was based on Kerouac's travels across America with
his friend Neal Cassady. Its importance was compared to Hemingway's nov
el The Sun Also Rises\, generally seen as the testament of the "Lost Gen
eration" of the 1920s.\n \nEnter Big Sur. Big Sur was Jack Kerouac’s las
t major work that many critics and literary scholars site as his most in
timate and introspective. One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur m
oves the audience along on a visceral ride of raw emotions and dramatic
events on which the book is based.\n \nThe story is told in several ways
through the narrative arc of his own prose. First-hand accounts and rec
ollections of Kerouac’s contemporaries\, whom many of the characters in
the book are based on such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti\, Carolyn Cassady an
d Michael McClure are interviewed. Reflections of artists\, poets\, acto
rs and musicians who have been deeply influenced by Kerouac’s unique gif
ts like Tom Waits\, Sam Shepard\, Patti Smith and Donal Logue give their
own interpretations of Kerouac’s cathartic writing style and fragile re
 ality. \n \nSpecial Guests

SUMMARY:Summer Scars
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for Best Picture at London’s prestigious Raindance

skip school one day to play in the woods only to have their lives scarr
ed forever. While hot-rodding on a stolen scooter\, they knock over Pet
er (Kevin Howarth)\, a disheveled drifter. At first\, he enjoys hanging
out with this group of teenagers\, however\, as the afternoon passes hi
s behavior grows increasingly bizarre and hostile. Using what he has le
arned about the kids\, Peter torments each one exposing their insecuriti
es and fears. One by one he tears their fragile\, adolescent psyches ap
art leaving the worst for the only girl of the group. The gang realizes

SUMMARY:This Dust of Words
DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Bill Rose (The Loss of Nameless Things) pays
moving tribute to brilliant Stanford student Elizabeth Wiltsee’s tragic
life. Incredibly intelligent\, with an IQ of 200\, Elizabeth taught her
self to read at age 4. Attending some of the best schools in the countr
y\, she was destined for literary success. Rather\, she shunned what sh
e called “the fancy life” and chose to live in the margins of society.
A free spirit unencumbered by worldly concerns. Disappearing for many y
ears\, she turned up one day on the doorstep of Watsonville’s St. Patric
k’s Church\, clearly having been homeless and apparently unable to speak
. It was at St. Patrick’s that she became part of a community that knew
and cared for her. Despite a deepening mental illness and increasingly
erratic behavior\, she was accepted by the congregation with compassion
and love. Interviews with Elizabeth’s family\, friends\, parishioners
and her Stanford mentor tell a beautiful\, kind-hearted story of a life
lived with ferocious independence\, poignant and haunting right to the v
 ery end.

SUMMARY:The Art of Travel
DESCRIPTION:Just out of high school\, Connor (Christopher Masterson\, TV’
s Malcolm in the Middle) is all set for marriage and the middle-class.
But when what he thought was true love turns out to be nothing but a pac
k of lies\, it’s time to step back and take a look at everything from a
totally different perspective: one that’s far\, far away.

Heading down
to Central America seems like something completely different\, the perf
ect land for adventure. But\, more than a little naïve\, Connor gets in
way over his head when he joins a motley group of travelers about to pl
unge into the jungle for a year-long expedition. Stripped of all comfor
table familiarity\, Connor must fend for himself and discover his own wa
y through the bewildering maze of a strange new life. Part coming of ag
e\, part road movie\, The Art of Travel twists and turns like a meanderi
ng river\, with unexpected comic surprises popping up around every bend.
Smart and funny\, it’s a journey that won’t soon be forgotten.

-Pete
  Crane\, Cinequest

SUMMARY:2nd Verse: The Rebirth of Poetry
DESCRIPTION:“Slam\,” for those not in the know\, is a dynamic form of com
petitive poetry that falls somewhere between hip-hop and Robert Frost.
In 2nd Verse\, we follow the lives of several Bay Area teenagers as they
prepare for the Brave New Visions International Poetry Slam Competition
. Despite difficult personal lives\, they find inspiration and positivi
ty through Slam\, turning into dynamos when they hit the stage to delive
r with power and confidence their own stories. They let it all out! Wi
th blazing performances by an international crew\, 2nd Verse inspires an
d offers hope for the youth of America and beyond. As one Poet mentions
at the competition\, “We always hear about and see young people doing n
egative or stupid things\, but how often do we get to see kids doing som
ething peaceful and positive\, supporting each other?”

SUMMARY:African Underground: Democracy in Dakar
DESCRIPTION:Originally shot as a 7 part documentary mini-series released
online\, African Underground: Democracy in Dakar\, highlights the transf
ormative role hip hop has had on politics in Dakar\, Senegal. Unlike in
the US where bling is king\, hip hop in Senegal is all about the messag
 e. The film follows rappers\, DJs\, journalists\, professors and people
on the street at the time before\, during and after the controversial 2
007 Senegalese presidential election. Through fresh rhymes with overt p
olitical messaging the youth of Dakar\, who have embraced hip hop since
its introduction there in the late 1980’s\, have dramatically influenced
the last two electoral cycles. Democracy in Dakar bridges the gap betw
een hip-hop activism\, video journalism and documentary film and explore

life he’s got left—his “man’s man” barbershop. To keep it\, he’ll be fo

SUMMARY:Crossroads at Nihonmachi
DESCRIPTION:Once spanning 64 blocks\, San Francisco’s Japantown stood as
a testament to the urban immigrant experience. The WWII internment of t
he Japanese caused a rapid degradation of the neighborhood. Rather than
provide assistance after the War to returning internees\, the city and
its corporate interests decided rather to demolish and rebuild Japantown
completely as a tourist mecca. Evicted en masse\, many with nowhere to
go and a weak grasp of English\, the citizens of Japantown fought back
and halted the community’s total annihilation. By 1973\, the neighborho
od was reduced its final 4 blocks. Moving forward to 2006\, external co
rporate forces again threaten to further shrink Japantown. Crossroads a
t Nihonmachi draws comparisons between then and now\, and calls for vigi
lant activism in the face of the destruction of all poor and ethnic urba
n communities. While the faces in Crossroads In Nihonmachi are mainly A
sian American\, the lessons for all community activists is made striking

SUMMARY:The Metrosexual
DESCRIPTION:It’s not easy being a single man in Los Angeles. Especially
when you’re a bit too sensitive\, too controlling and too calculating\,
and maintain an obsessive compulsion with your appearance. There is a l
abel for this “gay” straight man –
Eric Beumer is “The Metrosexual.” Hi

  controversial neck kiss\, an
overly planned house party and a fiasco wi

SUMMARY:Les Paul – Chasing Sound!
DESCRIPTION:The Godfather of the electric guitar. The Inventor of modern
recording. The Architect of Rock & Roll. These are just a few of the
superlatives that describe the man who revolutionized music. Strap in f
or a wild ride with this larger-than-life guitar wizard as we chart his
life from his early days in Waukesha\, Wisconsin to his heyday as a 1950
’s Jazz/Pop Superstar culminating with his dual inventions of multi-trac
k recording and the seminal musical instrument of the 20th century\, the
Gibson solid-body electric guitar. Still going strong at 90 years old\,
he brings down the house every week at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club. F
eaturing interviews with the likes of Jeff Beck\, Ron Wood\, Eddie Van H
alen\, BB King\, Paul McCartney and Keith Richards\, the extraordinary i
nfluence of this spry nonagenarian is clearly without comparison in toda

SUMMARY:Uchronia
DESCRIPTION:In the Black Rock Desert in 2006\, 90 artists from Belgium sh
ipped 100 miles of wooden beams to the playa. A 15 story\, 200’x100’ und
ulating Frank Gehry-esque space\, described by Burning Man founder Larry
Harvey as “the talk of the playa” appears. Dwarfing all other sculpture
s\, the Burners nicknamed it the “Belgium Waffle.” The biggest draw at
night\, revelers packed into the cavern and danced to electronica\, bath
ed in neon-green light. “We didn’t use a model\, we just started at the
bottom and kept adding as we went up\,” said Jan Kriekels\, who said he
funded the entire $250\,000 project\, including buying $250 tickets for
the volunteers who spent three weeks building it. Uchronia\, named after
a Belgian art movement\, centered on a world without the concept of tim
e\, Kriekels said. “This piece is a symbol for a system that creates its
own creators. We all did this together without being told how to do it
 — we are factory workers\, bookmakers\, editors\, designers\, artists\,
salespeople — and we can only do this if we refuse to be defined\,” he s
 aid. This is their story.

SUMMARY:Programming the Nation?
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to be closing our 7th edition with Santa Cruz\nP
remiere of local filmmaker Jeff Warrick’s 'Programming the Nation?' Thi
s socially relevant documentary explores the supposed use\, influence an
d potential subconscious side effects of subliminal messaging in adverti

f doing or buying things without any conscious reasoning? How is it that
the US consumes roughly 25% of the world's resources while only making
up 4.5% of its population? Are we all part of an elaborate scheme that
