Josh and Amanda meet at the San Francisco International Airport one day. In no time, they’re in the sack, rating favorite literature and eventually moving in together. Josh madly loves the soft, quiet Em (as he calls her) and fails to see the changes she seems to be going through. Em suddenly lands in the hospital and Josh is told that she has a bipolar condition which has been resistant to treatment. The doctor also tells Josh that he and Em need to separate for her own good. Josh never asks Em what she feels about it or anything about her past, and shows no interest in learning about her disease. His willful naivete and inaction, along with his difficulty in understanding that love may not be enough in this case, threatens any chance of the two finding their way back to each other.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Seattle International Film Festival, Em is a subtle, honest and beautiful meditation on what it’s like to love someone who is mentally ill.
